Last week I had the pleasure of attending the bi-annual lunch at 34 Mayfair for leading women in the hospitality sector. The lunch is organised by Ann Elliott and her team at Elliotts Agency, and is always an outstanding event in the calendar. As usual, there was an incredible mix of women in the room, and we all enjoyed hearing from a fantastic speaker in Sue Langley OBE, currently non-executive chairman of AJ Gallagher UK, non-executive director of UK Asset Resolution and the lead non-executive director for the Home Office.
These events remind me of the fabulous women who work across the sector, many of whom prefer to operate under the PR radar, quietly making their mark. The restaurant was packed with high achieving women including managing directors and senior players – many working for the large corporates whilst others were busy launching their own start-ups. What sets this event apart is the manner in which women want to help and support one another, sharing experiences and expertise. There is no hard selling but instead an atmosphere of friendship and camaraderie. The lunch is certainly not designed to exclude men – Ann is very clear about that. Instead, it offers a platform for women to meet likeminded women, share knowledge and network with one another in a relaxed and informal environment. And it works.
